Megalodon (Carcharocles megalodon) is an extinct species of giant mackerel shark that lived from 23 to 3.6 million years ago. The word megalodon comes from Greek root words that mean "giant tooth". Megalodon is considered to be the largest shark and fish that ever lived. It was possibly almost double the size of the largest great white shark on record, and roughly the same length as the average double-decker bus.
